Our Story

A decade in the arena.

From a Gertrude Street share-house to Australia's most-read indie gaming desk. Here's how the Kingdom grew.

  1. 2016

    The first post

A single retro-shooter retrospective, written after midnight in Fitzroy, hit 40,000 reads in a week. The blog had a heartbeat.

  2. 2019

    Boots on the ground

We covered PAX Aus live for the first time, filing 22 hands-on previews across the weekend from the Melbourne show floor.

  3. 2022

    The scoring reset

We dropped 10-point scores for a plain-English verdict system. Readers stayed; publishers grumbled. We took that as a win.

  4. 2025

    180k in the guild

Our weekly newsletter crossed 180,000 subscribers, all funded by readers — never by review embargoes or paid placements.

How We Review

Four steps to a verdict.

Every review follows the same disciplined path so you know exactly what our score is built on.

1

Full playthrough

We finish the campaign — no early-hours guesswork. Most reviews land on 20–60 hours of hands-on time before a word is drafted.

2

Retail-build testing

We benchmark the day-one build on PC, PS5 and Series X, logging frame drops, load times and every launch patch.

3

Second opinion

A second writer plays key sections cold to check the reviewer isn't an outlier. Disagreements go straight into the piece.

4

Plain-English verdict

We publish who a game is for, who should skip it, and the fair price — never a lonely number without context.

The Guild Speaks

What readers tell us.

"I've bought exactly zero duds since I started reading. The 'who should skip it' line at the end of every review has saved my wallet more than once."
Marcus T.Carlton, VIC · Mar 2025
"Their PAX Aus coverage is the only reason I skipped the queues and found the best indie booth of the show. Genuinely useful, not just hype."
Priya S.Brunswick, VIC · Nov 2024
"No inflated scores, no publisher spin. When they say a co-op game is worth it, my group buys it that night. Trust earned over years."
Jordan K.Fitzroy, VIC · Jan 2025
Good to Know

Frequently asked.

Do publishers pay for reviews?

Never. ThunderBattleKingdom runs entirely on reader newsletter subscriptions. We accept review code and event access, but no money, gifts or embargoed praise ever change a verdict.

How often do you publish?

Roughly four to six pieces a week — a mix of reviews, guides and features. The weekly wrap-up newsletter lands every Friday at 5pm AEST so you can plan your weekend backlog.

Can I pitch a guest article?

Absolutely. We pay freelance rates for original features and love hearing from Australian and NZ writers. Send a two-line pitch through the contact form and we usually reply within a week.

What does the newsletter cost?

The core weekly wrap is free forever. The Guild tier is AUD $7/month and adds early reviews, our full scoring notes and monthly members-only livestream Q&As with the team.
